Health Benefits

Here's drinking to your health...

Next time you enjoy a cup of African Dawn Rooibos, consider that you are gulping down goodness that not only brims with general health promoting properties, but also aids in putting a brake on your body clock.

The recent increase in the worldwide popularity of rooibos has partly been contributed to exciting research into its anti-ageing properties, specifically into its antioxidant effect.  Antioxidants are weapons with which the body beats off free radicals – a vicious enemy responsible for speeding up the ageing process and decay of the immune system. These rascals, by-products of normal cell function, wreak havoc in the body by attacking body proteins, fats and DNA.

Scientists also believe that imbalanced antioxidant levels contribute to a wide range of diseases, including heart disease, inflammatory disease (arthritis), Alzheimer’s disease, cancer and Aids.

Great news for tea lovers is the discovery by Japanese scientists that rooibos contains an enzyme very similar to one of the best-known antioxidants which can eliminate free radicals just after they are formed, called Super Oxide Dismutase (SOD).  It is best to brew rooibos for an extra few minutes to increase the SOD concentrate.

The cosmetic industry is increasingly latching onto the complexion enhancing benefits of rooibos. It has been included as a natural additive in various ranges of skincare products.

Cutting edge research, also from Japan, further suggests that rooibos may play a preventative role in the development of cancer. Results are as yet still inconclusive.

Broadly considering the tea’s multiple beneficial effects, it is evident that this characteristically sweet brew truly is nature’s gift of good health to man.

African Dawn Rooibos Tea bursts with goodness

  • It is completely pure, non-allergic and natural, containing no preservatives, additives or colourants. Good news for dieters: it contains no kilojoules (provided, of course, one leaves out the sugar!).

  • As a caffeine-free drink, it soothes the central nervous system. Recommended for sufferers of nervous tension, mild depression or hypertension, irritability, headaches and disturbed sleeping patterns.

  • Has an anti-spasmodic effect, which aids in relieving common infant ailments like colic and stomach cramps.

  • Added to a baby’s normal diet, rooibos supplements the daily intake of calcium, manganese and fluoride, all essential for the development of strong teeth and bones in growing children.

  • It is a safe drink for pregnant women. The lack of caffeine rules out the risk of increasing the two main discomforts of pregnancy: nausea and heartburn. Rooibos is also low in tannin, which would normally deplete a pregnant woman’s already low iron reserves.

  • Contains iron, potassium and copper, minerals essential for a variety of metabolic functions.

  • Offers relief for allergic symptoms such as hayfever and asthma.

  • Soothes the skin, alleviating itching and skin conditions like eczema, nappy rash and acne when directly applied to the affected area.

  • Caffeine-free contents help to relieve indigestive problems such as nausea, constipation, vomiting, stomach ulcers and heartburn.

  • Contains no oxalic acid, therefore considered as a safe drink for people suffering from kidney stones.
