Groenkol Rooibos Tea Estate was founded in 1956 by Willie Engelbrecht.  Over the past five decades, the Estate has successfully grown into a flourishing Rooibos enterprise.  Today it is managed by third generation Engelbrecht family members.

The family is steeped in the traditions of tea growing. Every stage of tea growing and tea processing is carefully monitored on site by family members and managers, to ensure the premium quality that has come to be associated with African Dawn products.

The Groenkol farm workers are housed on the Estate and the families have been living and working here since the farm was established.  Like the Engelbrechts, some of the families have been here for five decades. They too are steeped in the traditions of rooibos tea production and together form part of a formidable team.

The Estate is situated near the picturesque town of Clanwilliam , in the Western Cape Province of South Africa.  This region is well-known for the majestic Cedarberg mountain range and is a world famous and well visited tourist destination. As part of its environ-friendly policy to protect and promote the environment, Groenkol's management team has established Elandsberg Ecotourism .  Visitors can now tour the Estate with experienced naturalists and guides where they are shown the entire rooibos tea growing, harvesting, processing and packaging cycle.  Tourists are also able to embark on an exclusive and exhilarating journey of discovery to fantastic sandstone rock cave formations, Bushman paintings, a diversity of bird and animal life, and the magnificent uniqueness of the Cape Floral Kingdom . Ranked as one of the world's six floral kingdoms, this is the only plant kingdom found entirely within one country.

Of the 9 000 species of plants that occur in the Cape Floral Kingdom , more than half are founded nowhere else on earth.
